3. How do I calculate expected growth under the ABCs program?

• EOG Reading & Math growth and growth for EOC subjects will be determined by using the same formula

• EOG Reading and Math will be determined by using two years of scores when possible

• EOC scores determined using predictor subject(s) – examples (Algebra 1 predictor – 8th Grade EOG Math) & (Physics – Chemistry & Geometry)

• A Student is expected to do at least as well this year as he/she has done in the past, compared to other NC students who took the test in the past.

• Growth = comparison of current performance to past performance, looking at a student’s position compared to statewide performance

• Determined by calculations that use other Components at HS Level

• Each student will have a Growth Score for each subject taken called Academic Change (Zero or positive AC is good)

• To determine Expected Growth for a school, all of the AC scores are averaged

• If the average is 0.00 or greater, Expected Growth is met (HS have additional components in the model in addition to EOC scores)

• The other components are changes in drop out rate, competency pass rate and percentages of students meeting the College University Prep/College Tech Prep standards.

• Academic Change will calculated only for students who have the necessary test scores, and who have been in membership 140 days (or 70 days for High Schools)

1. Are Board meetings open to the general public?

Yes, the Board of Education meetings are open to the general public for the Open Session only.

2. Are all Board Meetings held at the ECPS Central Office?

All Board of Education meetings are held at the ECPS Central Services building located at 412 Pearl St. in Tarboro, except for the December and May meeting which are held at the Edgecombe Community College for the Gold Key Awards Ceremony.

3. Can members of the public speak at a Board meeting?

The Board has established time at each meeting for public comments by citizens who desire to address the board and who register prior to the start of the meeting. The Board has established a 3-minute time limitation per speaker for comments to be taken into consideration by the Board. Public comments must relate to items on the agenda. Feedback will not be given during the Board Session. If a response is necessary, the Board will respond within ten working days. [Edgecombe County Board of Education Policy 2210])

4. What is the purpose of the closed session?

Under the North Carolina Open Meetings Law, Sections 143-318.11 (a) (1), (a) (3), and (a) (6), the Board must approve a procedural motion to go into Closed Session to consider personnel matters, to consult with the attorney to preserve attorney-client privileged information, and to prevent the disclosure of student records rendered confidential under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, 20 U.S.C. 1232g, and the disclosure of personnel records rendered confidential under G.S. 115C-319 through 321.

1. How do I apply for free and reduced lunch for my children?

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications are distributed to each student at the beginning of

2. Where can I get a copy of the lunch menu?

The school lunch menu is posted on the Edgecombe County Public School website. You can also obtain a copy from the school your child attends.

3. What are the prices for breakfast and lunch?

Lunch Prices are:

1. What items are needed to register a child for school?

Parents need to have a birth certificate, two proofs of residence, social security card, and immunization record. If the student is Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten, the parent will also need to have a physical performed on their child within the last school year.

2. What is needed for my child to ride a bus to someone else's home?

A bus request change is only done for extreme emergencies due to the limited bus capacity. Parents have to provide a written note for the office and for the classroom teacher.

3. Why aren't reminders made for upcoming events?

Notices are sent home by the students. Parents need to check their child's agenda and book bag daily. The office also provides connect education calls periodically to remind parents of school events.

1. Does my child have to pass the End of Grade Test to be promoted?

The state of NC requires all students in grades 3, 5 and 8 to pass the End of Grade test prior to entering into the next grade. However, waivers can be granted by a team of educators.

2. What are the graduation requirements for students attending Edgecombe County?

Currently all students must have 28 hours of credit prior to graduation. For more information on required courses and the number of units for each course, please view NC Standard Course of Study

1. When will my invoice be paid?

Invoices are paid within 30 days of the invoice date.

2. Why was my invoice returned to me without payment?

The invoice was returned because it did not have tax included in the total. Edgecombe County Public Schools is NOT a tax-exempt organization.

3. May I pick up my check from the Central Office?

No- all checks for school vendors will be sent to the specific school; the check may be picked up from the specific school. All checks for the Central Office vendors will be mailed out from the Central Office.

1. What is the procedure if I want my child to attend a school outside of my district?

Complete a Student Reassignment Form by July 1 for a first semester transfer, or by November 15 for a second semester transfer.

Forms are obtained from Central Services office or your local school office. Applications will be submitted to Board of Education for approval.

2. Can I transfer my child to Edgecombe County Public Schools if I live in another county?

Out of county students may apply to attend school in Edgecombe County Schools by completing a Student Reassignment form and submitting it by the deadline dates. If approved, out of county students are subject to tuition fees, and must be released from their current school system.

3. My child will be entering kindergarten in the fall, can I request my child to attend kindergarten at another school?

Kindergarten students are eligible to submit Student Reassignment Request forms, however, Kindergarten students must complete early registration within their current school district. Board of Education approval of requests is based upon space availability.

1. How do I get a copy of my school record?

Request a Request for Student Records / Transcript Form from the Student Support Services at (252) 641-2606. Complete the form and return it to the Edgecombe County Public Schools Central Services office address at the top of the form. For company and other institutions, a signed release from the student must be attached to the form. A $3 fee is required and must be in the form of a money order or a certified check. This fee must accompany the completed form. The form must be notarized before it is returned.

2. How long will it take before I receive my school records?

It will take approximately 1-3 weeks after the request is received at the Edgecombe County Public Schools Central Services office.

1. How do I request help for my computer or printer-related problems?

See the employee who is designated to enter work requests at your site, and ask them to submit a work request. Be as specific as you can about the problem when you make the request.

2. Which browser is supported for NCWISE?

As of Dec., 2010, support has been added for Internet Explorer versions 7 & 8 and Firefox vers. 2.0.

3. Why will the computer not connect to the network?

For Windows XP users: make sure the "workstation only" box is not checked on the Novell login window.

Make sure the network cable is connected.

4. What is the network if it is not the Internet?

When you use a computer within your school or job site, you are logging in (accessing) that site's network server, not the Internet. Accessing the Internet happens when you open a browser from the computer desktop.

5. What do I do if the computer is infected with a virus or malware?

First, unplug the device from the network. Next, turn in a work order stating any details you can about the problem.

6. What is CIPA?

The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a federal law enacted by Congress to address concerns about access to offensive content over the Internet on school and library computers. CIPA imposes certain types of requirements on any school or library that receives funding for Internet access or internal connections from the E-rate program – a program that makes certain communications technology more affordable for eligible schools and libraries. In early 2001, the FCC issued rules implementing CIPA.

7. How do I avoid getting a virus or malware?

The safest way is by only visiting web sites that are work-related and trutsted. Web sites that promote coupon savings, gambling, music and game sharing, and pornography provide the most potential for infecting a computer.
Keep your computer's anti-virus and anti-malware software up to date.

You must be physically present and on the contact list in order to sign out your child. This keeps friends from calling in and pretending to be a parent.
