The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction moved to an on-line licensure system effective August 1, 2015. This new system will be accessible to the general public, as well as educators, who will be able to view educator's license areas and the effective and expiration date of the license.
Educators will also be able to view more details about their own license than can be viewed by the general public. Educators will have to create an on-line account to be able to do this by registering at https://vo.licensure.ncpublicschools.gov/datamart/mainMenu.do
. Registration begins by clicking on 'NCDPI Registration' in the bottom, left corner. Once the account is created and logged into, the educator can view their license data, as well as make applications for licensure changes directly to the Licensure Section. However, employed educators are highly encouraged not to make applications without the assistance of the Licensure Specialist for their school district.
Employed educators will be affiliated with their school system and will need to maintain this affiliation throughout their employment.
Employed educators are encouraged not to make applications for licensure changes without assistance, because they have not been trained on licensure requirements, are not aware of what documents are required for different types of requests, what changes directly affect a teacher's eligibility for continued employment and salary, etc. If an educator submits a request to the Licensure Section that requires a fee, but a mistake was made in the application process, the educator would not get their fee back because all fees are non-refundable
. When changes to an educator's license is needed, such as adding a license area, adding a provisional area, name change, applying for initial license, etc., applications can still be initiated by the district's licensure specialist. The educator will receive e-mail notifications of what they will need to do in order to finalize applications. Both the educator and the licensure specialist will be able to track progress on the request through their on-line access.
A couple of changes that have occurred due to the system being on-line include: all licensure area codes are now 5 digits instead of 6 and an educator's social security number is no longer their licensure number. Licensure numbers are now automatically generated by the on-line system.
Most all applications require a licensure processing fee. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid by either MasterCard or Visa credit card.
