Family Medical Leave

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides you with up to 12 workweeks of leave annually for one or more of the following reasons:
  • for the birth and care of the newborn child of an employee;
  • for placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care;
  • to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition; or
  • to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition.

As part of your family and medical leave, you must first exhaust any paid leave to which you are entitled; the remainder of your leave will be unpaid.

Employees should contact our Benefits Representative about FMLA leave requests. A FMLA leave request form will be sent to the employee to compete and return with any supporting documentation.

MAINTENANCE OF HEALTH BENEFITS
Edgecombe County Public Schools will maintain group health insurance coverage for an employee on FMLA leave whenever such insurance was provided before the leave was taken and on the same terms as if the employee had continued to work. If applicable, arrangements will need to be made for employees to pay their share of health insurance premiums for family members while on leave.

JOB RESTORATION
Upon return from FMLA leave, an employee will be restored to the employee’s original job, or to an equivalent job with equivalent pay, benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment. You may be assigned to a different position and/or worksite. You will not be placed in a job that requires additional licensure or certification without your consent.
