please add words of go to the chat for all to enjoy and thank you in advance for showing up today to show your love for a school system and for all stakeholders welcome to the 2021 school year we did my junior year as superintendent and as we usher in the new school year the board has promoted me and I will begin my senior year as superintendent thank you to our school board it is an honor can a privilege to lead great people who care about students families and Community will hear we are on August 11th for convocation a virtual convocation we had virtual graduation and virtual delivery from teachers to students it has been a heavy and hard lift but we have continued to move our school district forward we have help to move our community forward and we will continue to move our students forward while experiencing a yep pandemic a global pandemic we have to be kind and patient to each other during this crisis anything other than patience and kindness is unacceptable the stress levels family student teachers staff members as well as the community community and the world can negatively impact us the news outlets are informative but sometimes the information and it's overwhelming and can cause us to feel hopeless and fearful we can get wrapped up in the Panic of the pandemic the drama of the day and infinite overload of information but if we forget to be patient and kind to one another and to ourselves then I will not be okay so I'm asking each of us to be patient and to be kind to others and to yourself none of us has done this before lived in leg during a global pandemic not our parents not our community members not our teachers not other staff members not our system principles not our principles not our school board members and not your super proud senior superintendent I have never experienced a global Atlanta school system three times such as these is it scary everyday is it hard all day long will we be criticized absolutely but we will get through this some would say well how do you know because I know the people in ecps I know the leaders the students the teachers and the staff and the community we don't give up we don't stop we'll see this through with patience and kindness we may have some new vocabulary words by the time we get back to our car more life such as pandemic social distancing asymptomatic social bubbling epidemic vs. pandemic hotspot respiratory vs. ventilator 3 W's mask face shield or face covering and so many more but we will get what is together I would like to take a moment to introduce our wonderful school board members they are extremely dedicated and committed to ecps and Edgecombe County and we are blessed to have this combination of leaders billboard mr. Raymond privet newly elected School Board chair has been a member of the school board 2016 he represents district 6 he is a member of the appeals committee mister is a former principal for a CPS Miss Anne Kent School Board member she's our vice chair she's in been a member since 1994 she represents District 5 she's a member of the policy omiscan is also a former educator dr. Evelyn Wilson former School Board chair she has been a board member since 1990 she represents District 1 she's a member of our appeals committee for the boar and dr. Wilson is a former educator dr. Evelyn Johnson she's been on the board since 2010 she represents District 3 she's a member of the appeals committee and Doctor Johnson is a form of bol4 ecpps Miss Lily Worsley she's been a member of the board since 2018 she represents District 2 and she serves on the policy committee Miss Marvel Scott she's been member of the board sat 2014 she represents district 7 she's a member of the policy committee and Muscat retired as the Director of Social Services mr. William Ellis has been a board member 2016 he represents District 4 is a member of the policy committee and mr. Ellis is a former principal for ecpps we thank all of our schools and our community and now our district action team and our central office leadership team Miss Charlene Pittman assistant superintendent for human resources Miss Abby pre-trial assistant intended for curriculum and instruction Miss Erin Swanson director of innovation Mr Jerome Williams director of maintenance Miss Lori Leary Director of Finance Miss Ruth McDowell director of Child Nutrition Miss power 5 director of Elementary education Pastrana Andrews director of Middle grades education dr. Robert bat secondary education director Miss Janet Morris director testing and accountability Miss Megan Sykes director of exceptional children misters and hope communication coordinator Miss Rhonda Wainwright transport turn coordinator rheasilvia Anthony McGee Wallace coordinator I miss lynetta Scott she's our family resource coordinator thanks to each of you and please know that I enjoy working with you thank you for serving our school system well working hard and going above and beyond for student staff and Community you make each workday joyful today is the first day of 2021 school year and it represents new beginnings new adventures new goals new challenges and new successes for each of us and for our school system so it's a super senior superintendent employee take this wonderful Journey with me of lifting our students up and helping them to make a difference helping them to reimagine their Futures last year we asked what's your superpower this year we need everyone on the to be safe strong and ready and we know that Futures will continue to be reimagine and Edgecombe County Public Schools so let's enjoy the journey together Mister Christian principal of stocks Elementary School will sing the national anthem Astros score or the rain thank you Mr Heron for sharing your beautiful voice with us this morning join us in hearing from our newly elected School Board chair mr. Raymond Privet good day ladies and gentlemen my name is Raymond privette and it is an indie and deed in order for me to be here to welcome you and Tube greetings on behalf of the Board of Education of the Edgecombe County public schools on behalf of the board I say welcome and congratulations to you I'll 2021 new edition of Rh come County this is your boy the opportunity to say to each of you thank you and congratulations to each of you for that your decision on becoming a member of our family and for choosing educating children as your professor many years ago I sat in your proverbial seats where you're sitting now as I began my 40 years of education or career and educating children not easy but every moment of it was extremely rewarding is a there are very few professions as important as education you say you have the ability to Molle young minds and to prepare our students life's challenges even during these times of unprecedented times and you yourselves have many Educators who have gotten you who you are and so now it is your turn to be a teacher to Mentor the guide yes even the star about children's lives you see your job in our educational system requires that you are going to be a start we set you up to be the start to your stool that you will be able to Super Stop because every day you will give will give you opportunities to perform Miracles are teaching learning and laughing at your special school sites with a positive attitude and a sense of humor environments for your student to laugh about each day and sometimes the smiles that you put on your students faces will be the only smile that they will have their holiday sometimes it will be the silly jokes two will make while you're meeting them a greeting them sometimes it will be the jokes that they would share with you as they interact with you during the day and sometimes students will come out with the funniest kinds of statements without realizing what they're saying so let them laugh and then we want you to find the fun in the last that they have and find it so that you can enjoy the last yourself you see an educator takes a hand opens a mind touches of heart and shape the future of them and they may not tell you but you yourselves will be the best things that happened to them and the ordinary run of the earth little days I know that but many of them will not tell you until later so please enjoy the ride is here to help you and make you an order that you may succeed if I make clothes in the words of the late Whitney Houston please believe the children are our future teach them well and let them see play the way show them all the beauty that they possess inside give them a sense of Pride to make it let the children's laughter remind you of the way that you used to be blessings to each of you welcome to the edge it's a great place to be and a great world to live in thank you thank you how to prevent for sharing inspiring words we look forward to a successful school year please enjoy our school administrators as they share some Renditions of safe strong and ready are there words enjoy their music enjoy them having a good time I promise it's the principle here in car and this year we are Carver strong can't touch up look at my eyes a little dirt bike that you like that wake up hands are tied in no mercy painting wake up call Peaches away maybe then they'll listen to what you have to say come in German MattyB it was BTD Can you feel it when we scream it out. Demetrius Jenkins to where he is a former APS Fox Elementary School please join me in welcoming offered Menace traitors to the 2021 school year you just the state of our schools where have you been and where are we going so things for each school year year one we was 2017/18 that was my freshman year and our theme was leading with your head your heart and your and your two 2018-19 sophomore year Futures reimagined and year 3 what's your superpower year for my senior year your 2021 we're opening the school for the first time in history with remote learning for the first 6 weeks and our theme for this year is safe strong and ready let's take a look at our history so if you look at our date on the screen since my tenure is superintendent began July 2017 you see the date of where we have met or exceeded growth in 2016-17 had six schools eight tools did not meet growth but 2017 and 18 we went from six schools meeting or exceeding growth to 11 and we reduced our schools that did not meet growth from 8 to 3 as we moved into the 1819 school year we moved from 11 schools that met or exceeded growth to 12 schools that matter exceeded growth and those schools that did not meet growth removed from 3 down to two this represents hard work dedication action and perseverance from our teachers and leaders from our school administrators and our central office staff we know that our futures will be a re-imagined we were not able to have data for the 1920 school year due to school closure but we're looking forward to our data from 2021 congratulations and thank you for working so hard are continuous Improvement there several bullets that are listed there these are things that we I've been faced with over the last six months so School closure happened on March 14th our district action team jumped into a service on March 15th that was a fun day on the 14th the governor had a conference and he declared that the schools in North Carolina would be closed and then that Sunday our district action team began working we had a remote learning plan that was due to the state on July 20th and that's something that will launch our remote learning plan will watch into our Virtual Academy our summer jump start that application was due on June 22nd we worked hard and made sure that that was in place and our students are participating in summer school and then from Fall of Troy 20 + RV open plan we are opening our schools and playing see for the first 6 months which means remote learning and we will check the metrics after 4 weeks so we will use lots of different data points to help make decisions about when school should begin to reopen our school administrators and our central office staff all work to make sure that we were making the right decision for us students this is a diagram of our dish action team and so again we began meeting on Sunday March 15th and we continue to meet every Monday Wednesday and Friday virtually at 10 a.m. and the last few months we broke in this District action team into two a remote learning team and a reopen team and we only meet once a week on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. we meet so that we're all on the same page with understand what's going on and that we can make the best decisions for a student center this is a great team and they've done for nominal work Hats Off to the team and their hard work and dedication to getting things right for a staff student and community this fight is about digital divide we know that remote learning is difficult not just in North Carolina not just for the students but in particular for eastern North Carolina and for Edgecombe County so the digital divide is not just about devices but it's also about why and infrastructure that is something that has has been a spotlight on since school closure these things have not been fixed but we are trying to work around how can we make this happen how could we do what's best for a student recognize that there is an equity Gap and when will anytime we have school closure we have something in which we have to do things differently those gaps can persist and they can be provided so the problem for us is much bigger than just spotting the device it's also around the infrastructure and and what has been allowed to happen in on this side of the state so again that digital divide we are aware of it we're working on how to fill those gaps and make sure our students will be okay and then during that paint during the pandemic we still insist on coming up with innovative ways to do things so one Innovative plan that we're working through or not sure how this is going to work out turn on it something called learning pause or pandemic pop it could be Community businesses for small groups of kids of 10 or fewer and we'd love to Pilot a few location and so what would happen in those locations students who don't have access to Internet that they would work in small groups with a staff member from CPS to complete assignment and meet those expectations that are the same for the students for online again this is not in flesh. we're working on it we're having meetings about it and we're trying to see how can we make this happen in our community and what a remind you again of our vision or Equity vision and our district goals I'm very proud of our school system are school board our teachers in our leaders because they are in a brace our vision for the effort and hard work show up in our work daily and it will do our expectations of ourselves of our students our core values and graduated and names are also listed and so when we look at those who want to think again about how we demonstrate these three I work with our students as we usher in a new school year I will continue to meet with parents teachers and students and because I need to hear from each group so that we are sure and that we can continue to improve so that we in our efforts in our work we can't leave from the central office we have to leave from the schools and from our neighborhoods that we serve again take a look at our core values and our graduate and make sure that you are living those Grant graduate open our students to be able to live that permission statement on edge empowerment determination growth mindset and exposure that's our mission for Edgecombe we want to give her students an edge in Pursuit Of The Graduate aims to the right of this life or our priorities and this is part of our district strategic plan to our excellent party to Talent recruitment development priority 3 equity in action priority for purposeful Partnerships where we really want to make sure that the folks that we're connecting with our helping our students reach their graduate Dames and then priority for resume resilient Foundation making sure that the things that we are most important for making sure that we put those things first hope you enjoy the PD session that began at 9 Kim additional sessions are scheduled from 11:15 until 3 p.m. today County beginning teacher of the year is a beginning teacher who demonstrates excellence in performance by going above and beyond job expectations sales as a team player and serves as a role model for advancing the goals and mission of El Cajon County Public Schools this year's beginning teacher of the year Collies hat this to say about her there is never a point where student feels that they cannot achieve greatness in her classroom she goes above and beyond for her students to ensure that they received the highest level of rigor possible she is really creative in her approaches to working with her student she applies techniques which provides students with real life hands 1 strategies to help them with everyday life skills she is truly a team player and an asset to our school and to her students this year's beginning teacher of the year so let me open the right below Tatiana rodak from middle school this year's Edgecombe County Public Schools teacher of the year has a masters in science in curriculum and instruction with a focus on stem education she is a member of the North Carolina science Teachers Association has been the science department chair at her school sits 20 16 as well as the main sponsor for her school's Junior Beta Club this year she will expand her teacher leadership as an extended impact teacher through opportunity culture she developed a girls for stem Club That Grew From 12 to 32 girls in one school year re CPS teacher of the year believes that students should be given the opportunity I need to learn what they're interested in and what spikes their curiosity if you're excited the student will be empowering Middle School first to see the world beyond their everyday life if my motivation to show up and give it my all each day this year's Edgecombe County teacher of the year so again I say welcome to the 2021 school year it is with joy and excitement that we Embark upon this year even though pandemic despite these difficult and uncertain times one of our former students captured the phrase of build back better after Princeville Elementary School flooded a few years ago and indeed we did build back better and we will do it again but this time will be better during the pandemic and reap the benefits after the pandemic the Golden Triangle of quantity quality and Equity you can't just ignore while strengthening the others quantity is an amount or number quality is a standard or measure and Equity is fat being fair and then impartial we need each of these in Balance to breath in our students or staff in our
