Salsgiver named Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teacher

The statewide recognition through the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The program recognizes teachers who exemplify mathematics teaching excellence by nurturing students' enthusiasm for mathematics through everyday classroom experiences. Salsgiver was recognized at the NCCTM State Conference in Greensboro earlier this month.

NCCTM is the professional organization in North Carolina of all persons responsible for the teaching of mathematics. Its membership includes teachers from all levels, kindergarten through graduate school, and other professionals who work with curriculum and materials for the teaching of mathematics.

“Students love Ms. Salsgiver because she is kind, loving, fun, and cares about them.  She gets to know every student in her class as a whole person.  She is able to see exactly what each child brings to the community, and her whole teaching approach involves finding and using children's unique strengths to help them overcome their struggles and develop a positive self-concept,” said Hillary Boutwell, G.W. Bulluck Elementary School Principal.

“Ms. Salsgiver has strong academic expectations and shows her students every day that she believes they can, and will, succeed.  Even students who enter her grasp barely knowing the foundational skills associated with the Math curriculum, leave the year as a bona fide math star, but more importantly find themselves possessing a new found appreciation for mathematics and how it relates to their lives. Our school, and our district, is incredibly blessed to have her support and dedication,” added Boutwell.
