AIG Services

Mission

The Mission of the Academically/ Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program is to advocate for gifted students and enhance the development of learners through an environment that rigorously challenges, nurtures, and promotes self-directed life-long learning.

Philosophy of Giftedness

Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) believes Gifted Education is an integral component of the total educational environment, which promotes academic excellence for all students. Gifted students are unique and have learning needs different from others of their age, experience, or environment. To reach their potential these students must attain the basic curriculum while participating in differentiated experiences that are rigorous and challenging. ECPS is committed to providing a multidimensional continuum of services to advanced and gifted students. Edgecombe County Public Schools also see nurturing of potentially gifted students critical to the success of its Academically Intellectually Gifted Program. A working partnership of school personnel, students, parents, and the community is necessary to meet the diverse needs of these students.

Definition of Giftedness

Edgecombe County Public Schools supports the North Carolina definition of giftedness:

Academically of intellectually gifted students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated education services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular education program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
